Amazon.com ReviewIn the past, Antonia Fraser's bestselling histories and biographies have focused on people and events in her native England, from Mary Queen of Scots to Faith and Treason: The Story of the Gunpowder Plot. Now she crosses the Channel to limn the life of France's unhappiest queen, bringing along her gift for fluent storytelling, vivid characterization, and evocative historical background. Marie Antoinette (1755-93) emerges in Fraser's sympathetic portrait as a goodhearted girl woefully undereducated and poorly prepared for the dynastic political intrigues into which she was thrust at age 14, when her mother, Empress Maria Theresa, married her off to the future Louis XVI to further Austria's interests in France. Far from being the licentious monster later depicted by the radicals who sent her to the guillotine at the height of the French Revolution, young Marie Antoinette was quite prudish, as well as thoroughly humiliated by her husband's widely known failure to have complete intercourse with her for seven long years (the gory details were reported to any number of concerned royal parties, including her mother and brother). She compensated by spending lavishly on clothes and palaces, but Fraser points out that this hardly made her unique among 18th-century royalty, and in any case the causes of the Revolution went far beyond one woman's frivolities. The moving final chapters show Marie Antoinette gaining in dignity and courage as the Revolution stripped her of everything, subjected her to horrific brutalities (a mob paraded the head of her closest female friend on a pike below her window), and eventually took her life. Fraser makes no attempt to hide the queen's shortcomings, in particular her poor political skills, but focuses on her personal warmth and noble bearing during her final ordeal. It's another fine piece of popular historical biography to add to Fraser's already impressive bibliography. --Wendy Smith Marie Antoinette Never Said "Let Them Eat Cake" Today I found out Marie Antoinette never said let them eat cake Now I know what some of you are thinking Of course she didnt she spoke French! 18th Century Fashion Marie Antoinette & Haute Couture Eighteenth Century Fashion- Marie Antoinette & Haute Couture When it comes to eighteenth century fashion particularly haute couture and her fabulousness Marie Rihanna as Marie Antoinette for CR Fashion Book - Rihanna Rihanna Morphs Into Marie Antoinette for CR Fashion Book A blunt-smoking boob grabbing Marie Antoinette nonetheless Marie Antoinette Movie Review (2006) Roger Ebert Ten things that occurred to me while watching "Marie Antoinette" 1 This is Sofia Coppola's third film centering on the loneliness of being female and surrounded by Viator Exclusive: Versailles Palace and Marie-Antoinette's Experience the opulence of Versailles and Marie Antoinettes personal palace Le Petit Trianon on a fascinating day tour from Paris Enjoy a skip-the-line guided Marie Antoinette Beauty Routine - Refinery29 I turned to Melanie Clegg author of Marie Antoinette: Intimate History and the woman behind the preeminent Antoinette blog Madame Guillotine Let them eat cake - Wikipedia Bibliography Barker Nancy N Let Them Eat Cake: The Mythical Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution Historian Summer 1993 55:4:709 Campion-Vincent Marie Antoinette Biography - life family children death Marie Antoinette was born on November 2 1755 in Vienna (now in Austria) the capital of the Holy Roman Empire She was the eleventh daughter of the Holy Roman Marie Antoinette van Oostenrijk - Wikipedia Marie Antoinette van Habsburg-Lotharingen: 1755 - 1793: Koningin-gemalin van Frankrijk: Periode: 1774 - 1792: Voorganger: Maria Leszczyska: Opvolger: Josphine de Marie Antoinette History Smithsonian Marie Antoinette The teenage queen was embraced by France in 1770 Twenty-three years later she lost her head to the guillotine (But she never said Let them eat
